Inflammatory Bowel Disease, High-Dose Steroids, Osteoporosis, or an Oncological Etiology for a Pathological Femoral Neck Fracture in a Young Adult: A Case Report
نویسندگان
چکیده
UNLABELLED Femoral neck fractures occur in approximately 6,000 of young adults annually (ages 18-49) (1). Of these, a high-energy traumatic event is the typical cause. Although medications and chronic diseases have been implicated as confounding causes of hip fractures, clinicians should have a high index of suspicion for an oncologic etiology of hip fractures occurring in young patients without an inciting traumatic event. STUDY DESIGN A case report and literature search in the English language.

Analysis of risk factors for low bone mineral density in inflammatory bowel disease.
BACKGROUND/AIM Several risk factors have been suggested for osteoporosis which frequently occurs in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. We studied prevalence and risk factors for reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in IBD patients at the University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland. METHODS The BMD was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at the lumbar spine and femoral neck in ...

OBJECTIVE Most studies have shown contradictory results regarding predictive factors of osteoporosis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Since in these studies either T- or Z-scores has been used, our aim was to compare T- and Z-score in identifying risk factors of osteoporosis in IBD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bone density was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at L2-L4 of the...
متن کاملOsteoporosis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Bone mineral content in spinal trabecular and peripheral cortical bone was measured in 75 unselected patients with small and/or large intestinal inflammatory bowel disease. Osteoporosis, defined as a bone mineral content greater than 2 SD below the age and sex matched normal mean value was present in 23 patients (30.6%). Three amenorrhoeic females aged 34, 38, and 42 years had severe clinical o...
متن کاملPathological Fracture of Femoral Neck Leading to a Diagnosis of Wilson's Disease: A Case Report and Review of Literature
Wilson's disease (WD) is a rare inherited disorder of copper metabolism. It chiefly has hepatic, neurological and ophthalmic manifestations. Although osteoporosis, rickets and early arthritis are common features of WD, they are under-recognized. Musculoskeletal manifestations very rarely lead to diagnosis of the disease. Here we present a case of a 12-year-old girl who presented with a 3-month-...
متن کاملSubcapital femoral neck fracture after fixation of an intertrochanteric fracture with a proximal femoral nail: a report of two cases.
Subcapital femoral neck fractures are a rare complication after fixation of an intertrochanteric fracture with a proximal femoral nail. We report 2 such cases where the patients had severe osteoporosis, based on Singh's index and pathological findings. In one case there was a technical error leading to a tip-apex distance of more than 20 mm, but osteoporosis appeared to be a more significant ca...
